Ask Purina to Stop Using Kangaroo Meat in Pet Food!

This campaign appeals to Purina, a pet food company, to stop using kangaroo meat in pet food*. It is our belief that exploiting native wildlife is morally and ethically unacceptable. The Kangaroo is an iconic animal that is adored by people all around the world and is one of the two animals that appear on the Australian Coat of Arms.

Each year approximately 4 million kangaroos are brutally killed for profit by the kangaroo industry. Kangaroos including mothers with pouch dependent joeys are targeted at night by shooters. Although the shooters are supposed to lethally wound the kangaroo (by a single shot to the head) to avoid suffering, many kangaroos are shot in the jaw, neck or chest, which causes immense and often prolonged suffering.

The fate of orphaned joeys is equally despicable. Once the mother has been killed, they are helpless. The Code of Practice for Humane Shooting of Kangaroos states that ‘at foot’ joeys should be killed by a single shot to the head or heart, but many joeys escape and face death by starvation, cold, dehydration or predation. Pouch dependent joeys are ripped from their dead mothers pouch and either hit over the head with a metal pipe or decapitated and discarded - a practice that is considered acceptable the Australian government.

Dear Sir/ Madam, I am writing to express my concerns over Purina's use of kangaroo meat in dog food. It is deplorable that an Australian company that seems to care for animals by providing nutritionally sound pet food products would support the barbaric annihilation of a gentle, unique, inoffensive and environmentally significant native animal by its millions. - this does not reflect well on your companies image. Kangaroos killed for their meat and skins suffer tremendously and the shooting of kangaroos is not monitored by animal welfare experts or the RSPCA meaning shooters can do what they like. Video footage obtained by animal activists has revealed serious violations of the Code of Practice for the Humane Shooting of Kangaroos including kangaroos being shot in the jaw, neck and chest which causes extreme and often prolonged suffering. In addition, mother kangaroos with pouch dependent and at foot joeys are also targeted leaving countless baby kangaroos orphaned and at threat from dying of predation, cold and starvation. The standard method of killing a furless joey is decapitation while older joeys are hit of the head with a metal pipe. Shooters have also been seen slamming joeys into their trucks and stamping on them. These infants are fully conscious during this extreme brutality. As a company that claims to care about the welfare of animals, including the ones that end up in your pet food, I implore you to stop using kangaroo meat in your products on the grounds of cruelty. I hope that Purina will restore the trust of Australian's, many of which are loyal customers of Purina, by discontinuing the use of kangaroo meat. Thank you for your time with this matter.
