Vegan Products

Want to give animal products the flick but now sure what to eat? Below is a list of some of the great vegan products that you can buy from your local supermarket or health food store.

Flesh Free Substitutes
Bacon
Try Redwood Vegetarian Rashes, with no cholesterol, a fraction of the fat of real bacon and best of all no cruelty, these rashes are perfect for a guilt free breakfast. Try serving with toast, fried tomatoes, hash browns and ketchup! You’ll find Redwood Vegetarian Rashes at selected health food and cruelty free shops.
Burgers
Our favourite is Fry’s Traditional Burgers which you can find in the freezer section of some supermarkets. Also keep an eye out for Pureland Curried Lentil and Sesame & Tomato burgers in the refrigerator section at selected Coles outlets.

Chicken
We recommend Fry’s Vegetarian Golden Crumbed Schnitzels or Chicken-Style Nuggets, they are deliciously addictive and unlike real chicken, free of nasty bacteria and hormones!

Fry's make a great range of delicious and healthy vegan frozen food including vegie burgers and schnitzels.
Mince
We recommend Sanitarium Casserole Mince, it’s perfect for using as a taco filling, in stews or in your favourite spaghetti bolognaise recipe. You will find Sanitarium Casserole Mince in the kosher/ health food aisle of most supermarkets.

Polony
Try Fry’s Vegetarian Polony. Use as a topping for homemade pizzas or add to salad sandwiches. Also look out for Sanitarium “Smoked Luncheon” and “Henchen”. You will find Sanitarium Luncheon in the refrigerated section at selected Woolworths and Coles stores while Fry’s Polony is usually available from selected kosher food outlets.

Sausages
Try Fry’s Traditional Sausages or Hot Dog Vienna’s, they taste just like the real thing minus the cruelty and unhealthy bits. Also try Sanitarium "Vegie Delights" soy sausages or hot dogs and Eatwell vegetable sausages. You’ll find all these brands at selected supermarkets, health food or kosher stores.

Want more to choose from?
For more variety, you can also try your local Asian supermarket. Many Asian grocery stores stock a variety of imported vegetarian soy based ‘meat’ and ‘fish’ products, which are ideal for using in your favourite dish!
Snacks
Chips and Biscuits
Need to stock up on party snacks, but not sure what’s ok? These days it’s easy to find a variety of vegan snacks at your local supermarkets. Some of our favourites include Arnotts BBQ Shapes, Smiths Original Potato Chips and Red Rock Deli Sea Salt Potato Chips. If you have a bit of a sweet tooth, try Kraft Original Oreo’s or Leda Choculence Biscuits.

Chocolate
Who said vegans can’t eat chocolate? Many dark chocolates are actually dairy free! When shopping next, keep an eye out for Whittakers Bittersweet Dark Chocolate (our favourite) and Sweet William "dairy free" varieties which include Original, White Delight and even choc chips for cooking!

Jelly
Most jellies contain gelatine, a product derived from animal skin and bones....gross hey!

If you can't live without jelly, then look out for Vitarium gelatine free jelly... it's available at Coles supermarkets in the health food aisle and selected health food stores - flavours include raspberry, tropical lemon, lime and orange.

Asian supermarkets often sell jellies that are made from Agar (a natural substance sourced from seaweed) instead of gelatine. Alternatively, experiment with agar to make your own jelly!

Marshmallows
Who wants to eat gelatine? Not us! But all marshmallows available at the shops contain gelatine, which is made of animal skin and bones... yuck! For delicious, fluffy and cruelty free marshmallows, try Angel Foods Marshmallow Mix. Once you make your own fresh marshmallows you will wonder why you ever ate those aweful shop packet ones. Available from cruelty free shops around Australia and selected health food stores.

Meringues
For delicious egg free meringues, give Angel Foods Meringue Mix a go! Each pack makes around 100 meringues or try making lemon meringe pie. Available from cruelty free shops around Australia and selected health food stores.

Waffles
Craving waffles for breakfast? Why not try Van's Waffles! Simply toast and top with maple syrup for a delicous cruelty free breakfast. You will find Van's Waffles at selected health food and kosher stores. Alternatively, try making your own - simply pick up a waffle iron and then check out our vegan food resource for our very own vegan waffle recipe!

Dairy Alternatives
Cheese
Whether you’re a fan of toasted cheese sandwiches or parmesan on your favourite pasta dish, there’s a soy alternative to suit your needs. Popular brands include Cheezly, Tofutti and Kingland. Cheezly products are usually available from some health food stores, while Tofutti and Kingland products can often be found in the refrigerator section at selected supermarkets. For dairy free parmesan cheese, try Parmazano, which is available online from the Cruelty Free Shop.
For a healthy and cruelty free alternative to dairy cream, try Soyatoo Topping cream or Soy Whip.

Cream
Try Soyatoo Topping Cream or Soy Whip (which is just like dairy whip in a can). You will find Soyatoo at selected health food stores and online at the Cruelty Free Shop. Other varieties of soy based cream can be found at selected kosher stores.

Ice Cream
Addicted to creamy stuff? Try Sanitarium So Good “Vanilla Bliss”, “Chocolate Bliss” or “Vanilla Chai”. You will find these varieties and possibly others at your local Coles, IGA or Woolworths. Other great soy ice creams to keep an eye out for include Tofutti Cuties, Spoil Me Raw and Purely Decadent – Try smaller supermarket chains and health food stores for these brands!

Margarine
We recommend Nuttelex, it’s perfect for cooking or spreading on toast. You will find a variety of Nuttelex spreads at all good supermarkets.

Milk
These days the range of soy milk is almost as big as the dairy milk section. Soy milk can be used in everything from cooking to milkshakes. The most common brands in Australia are “Sanitarium So Good” and “Vitasoy”. If you don’t like the taste of soy milk, oat milk and rice milk are great alternatives.

Sour Cream
Love wedges with sour cream? Try Toffutti Sour Supreme, it tastes just like real sour cream - minus the cruelty!

Yoghurt
Love Yoghurt? Try Kingland soy yoghurt varieties; they are to die for! Flavours include “Fruits of Paradise”, “Strawberry”, “Mango and Peach” and “Berries”.

Egg Alternatives
Egg Replacer
We recommend using Orgran “No Egg” natural egg replacer which is usually available from most major supermarkets (in the health food/ Kosher section) and health food stores. One box is equivalent to 66 eggs!

Other
You can also substitute either 2 tablespoons of cornstarch or 2 tablespoons arrowroot powder in place of one egg. If you run out of egg replacer and are desperate, 1/4 cup of apple sauce will suffice.

Honey Alternatives
Golden Syrup
Golden syrup is a great alternative to honey. It tastes great on crumpets and is perfect for using in recipes that require honey including cakes and biscuits. Our favourite golden syrup recipe is mock “honey chicken”. Simply drizzle golden syrup over your favourite soy chicken, lightly fry until golden brown and sprinkle with sesame seeds - it tastes divine!

Other great alternatives to honey include treacle, rice syrup and rice malt. You will find golden syrup and treacle in the spreads aisle at supermarkets while rice syrup and rice malt can be found at some health food stores.
