Lab chimps see sun for first timeVivisection
Article submitted by admin on 08/09/11
The release of chimps being held in an Austrian lab for animal testing has become a viral hit across social media networks. The chimps were reportedly held in the dark for almost 30 years before being released on the back of a 14-year campaign by animal rights groups.

The Daily Mail says testing ended on the apes in 1997, when the pharmaceutical company behind the research was sold and the chimpanzees were moved to a farm. But the task of readjusting to the outside world has had to be carefully managed in order for the chimps to survive.

PETA offers to pay for abattoir webcamsAnimal Welfare
Article submitted by mikey on 14/06/11
THE animal welfare group, PETA, has offered to pay the cost of installing web cameras in all foreign abattoirs receiving live animals from Australia to ensure they are treated properly.

In a letter sent to Prime Minister Julia Gillard, PETA warns that the abuse of cattle in abattoirs in Indonesia that prompted an export ban last week was also common in other countries that took live animal exports from Australia.

While congratulating Ms Gillard for suspending live cattle exports to Indonesia, PETA Australia campaign director Jason Baker said additional steps were needed to ensure the welfare of livestock, warning that "the Indonesian abuses are not unique".

Pet? Companion animal? Ethicists say term mattersAnimal Welfare
Article submitted by admin on 04/05/11
Are you the "owner" of a dog or cat? Maybe you should consider yourself a "human caregiver" instead. And Fido and Fluffy? Perhaps they should be "companion animals," not just "pets."

Such vocabulary shifts will help elevate the discourse about other species and, in turn, improve our treatment of them, according to the new Journal on Animal Ethics.

The foreword in the peer-reviewed academic publication, which was first published last month, even suggests getting rid of terms like "critters," "beasts" and "wild animals," along with phrases such as "drunk as a skunk" and "eat like a pig."
