They say an elephant never forgets. The past few days are likely to be seared in the memories of elephants - and staff - at Sydney's Taronga Zoo.
The matriarch of the zoo's elephant herd, Porntip, showed on March 1 she was ready to give birth to a 100kg calf, after having been artificially inseminated about 22 months before.

Kraft Foods Australia says it is pleased that an American festival show featuring a red kangaroo that is goaded into fighting a human clown has cancelled the exhibition.
The American arm of Kraft - the owners of Vegemite - was sponsoring the show in the Texas town of Hidalgo, which claimed to be a celebration of all things Australian. Following widespread publicity, Kraft released a statement on Saturday saying it was pleased the event had been cancelled.

It’s estimated that 200, 000 perfectly healthy animals are put down each year in Australia, simply because they don’t have a place to call home...
With thanks to organisations like the Animal Welfare League of Queensland (AWL), however, thousands of strayed and abandoned animals over the past fifty years have been saved.

LAND O'LAKES — An animal rights organization says it has reports that pigs are being cut up with tools and bashed with rocks by inmates who work in the Pasco County jail's agriculture program.
"There have been instances where pigs have been mutilated as other inmates cheer and holler at the spectacle," People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, citing unnamed sources, said in a letter Tuesday to Pasco Sheriff Bob White, county commissioners and administrators and State Attorney Bernie McCabe.

ANIMAL welfare groups like the Selangor Society for Prevention of Cruelty Against Animal (SPCA), when reacting to the spate of pre-New Year publicity by establishments having tiger photography sessions, have denounced such events as outright cruelty to the animal.
Malaysian Animal Rights and Welfare Association (ROAR) president N. Surendran says by exposing them to such sessions will only expose the tigers to stress.

THE inclusion of a Taronga Zoo float in the Mardi Gras parade has been branded a “slap in the face” to Animal Liberation. Sumatran tigers won out against a protest over battery hens when it came to the parade held on Saturday.
Animal Liberation spokeswoman and Mosman resident Lynda Stoner accused Mardi Gras organisers of hypocrisy in refusing the Animal Liberation float in the parade but giving the green light to the float organised by Taronga Zoo staff.

Performers are limbering up for the opening night of Circus Oz in Adelaide.The city's Lord Mayor and former ringmaster, Michael Harbison, started the show in the 1970s.
Artistic director Mike Finch says it has since toured internationally in various guises. "Contemporary circus is in a massive worldwide boom really and from the late 70s circus has sort of re-invented itself worldwide, so Cirque du Soleil arrived in the 80s and then whole lot of little companies," he said.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) is holding a special hearing to decide the future of the property at Beremboke, west of Melbourne, which is allegedly operating without a permit.

AN animal rights group has called for Knut the polar bear, who shot to global stardom as a cub in 2007, to be castrated to avert incest with his cousin.
The three-year-old darling of Berlin Zoo was given a female companion, Giovanna, last year but the German chapter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) warned against their mating.

Police are calling for witnesses to an attack on a black swan in Busselton. It is believed a man in his late teens kicked the swan twice when it was crossing Brown Street about 5:30pm (AWST) on Monday.
The animal suffered a broken wing and had to be put down. The offender is described as fair skinned with dark hair - he was wearing jeans and a white jumper.
